Nowadays, even with highly developed search engines, people still want a "safe" way to share and ask for information in a private manner. Also, besides asking for acquaintances' opinions, it is definitely more efficient to seek advice from experts through a well-structured communication platform.

On this account, it is essential to establish a platform that allows experts from all the possible areas to gather and help people solve their problems efficiently, which, in the meantime, not sacrificing the privacy of both parties.

Problem

Users prefer a professional platform to help them with all sorts of problems in their life without risking private information. Yet seeking help is not merely a Q&A process, users may also prefer a well-designed communication platform which enhances their user experience and improve efficiency .

Section1: Discover

Research & Survey

Competitive Analysis
To get a whole picture of the market, we analyzed ten well-developed apps that offer expert services or have similar features to our app. For example, for answering questions, there is Quora. For matching-making and dating, there is Tinder.
This preliminary analysis compares their advantages, disadvantages, and potentials through the marketing strategy , product interface and main features. The insight for Quora and Tinder are generated as follows:

User Research

User Interview
To understand users behaviors and determine which functions they would like to explore by using our app, I invited 30 interviewees to ask key questions about their needs and pain points.

Quantitative Survey
After verbal interviews, I did surveys to collect numerical data that can be used to show the proportions of all the needs and concern from the potential users. Here is the result:

Section2 : Define

Research Findings Summary

Research Findings

Most users have experience of seeking advice and solutions from the internet. Compared to search engines or Q&A community, an expert app could really benefit users through real-time communications. Professionals with certifications or high rates are essential for the expertise of the app.
1. Users would prefer easily-accessible chat screen and recommendation system supported by big data.
2. Users would like to go to professionals for advice.
3. Live chat would be preferred for real-time communication and support.
4. Users are most likely to address personal topics, such as health, career & life plan, nutrition & fitness, etc.

Personas

To project on target users, I created personas based on our research to understand their needs, requirements, and frustrations. One of the characters is shown as follow.

User Journey Map

After creating the personas, I mapped out individual user's impressions of touch points while running across various functions on the product. I made notes on their interactions with the app, pain points, and reviews of the identified pages in given scenarios.

User Insights

By conducting numerous interviews and surveys with a variety of users, I targeted three different types of user characters to develop an insightful review of our platform:

Section3 : Ideate

Blueprint & Information Architecture

User Flow

By targeting clicks directed from the app, I also created flows based on primary tasks: getting started, linking with other social media accounts, looking for experts, making reservations, and initiating the service.

Sitemap

To perfect the ideation process, I developed a site map to organize the details of the full interface.

Section4 : Design/delivery

Prototypes & Testing & Methods Bank

Wireframe Sketch

After having an organized plan for user tasks and flows, the first stage of the app interface was shown as follows:

Testing

Methodology
The study was held at either the participants' places of choice or my school and was conducted moderated in-person or moderated remotely. The test included a short briefing, a task performance with 'Ube experts' app on smartphone and a debriefing.

Test Report
After carefully looking into the interview notes, we identified five issues to be the most essential part for further inquiries.

Conclusion
The above-listed pain points and incomplete features were taken into consideration, and would be implemented or corrected in the updated version of the app.

Refine Prototype

Final Prototypes

Style Guide

To maintain consistency throughout the entire platform, I established a design system that would guide us with the visual treatment for the interfaces.

Conclusion

Although the Ube Expert ends as a sketch, I still plan to move forth with this design iteration and perform usability testing to evaluate user feedback and enhance the platform in the future. Usability testing conveys a task-focused plan and will be evaluated using the following metrics to address both usability success and the overall product success:
1. Service Success Rate
2. Time Taken Per Service
3. Net Promoter Score
4. Customer Satisfaction Scale

All in all, this has been a very rewarding experience, as I've learned a lot about how different forms of research apply to every stage of the UX process. Thanks for reading!

Psst, you've reached the end...how about another story?

Alternatively, here's a fancy sheet of paper.
